We are pleased to share that the Unione Buddhista Italiana (UBI) has generously offered a donation of €2,000 to the International Mahayana Institute (IMI), marking their first direct support of IMI. This contribution was the result of a heartfelt initiative by Ven. Dechen, IMI European representative for nuns, who reached out to UBI. In her letter to UBI President Filippo Scianna, she wrote:
“I’m writing to ask whether UBI might consider making a donation to the International Mahayana Institute (IMI). As you know, IMI provides essential support to monastics—many of whom receive no other financial assistance.
Over the years, IMI has helped several monastics connected with Italy. I understand that UBI doesn’t support monastics directly, and that’s perfectly understandable. However, I wonder if there might be a way for UBI to contribute to IMI, which does directly support monastics in need. Any contribution would greatly ease the strain on their already limited resources.
With warm regards and deep respect.”
We were very happy to hear that UBI recognised the importance of IMI’s support for individual monks and nuns in their studies, retreats, and basic needs.
In response, UBI President Filippo Scianna replied with a kind heart and generous spirit:
“Dear Venerable, thank you for your message and for clearly outlining the difficult circumstances many monastics are facing. We deeply appreciate the important work IMI is doing to support those in need, and we recognize the seriousness of the challenges you’ve described.
We have carefully considered your request and, within the limits of our current resources, we confirm our willingness to offer a contribution. However, I would like to inform you that we will not be able to go beyond the amount of €2,000. We remain open to exploring possible future collaborations, and if you think it would be helpful, we would be glad to connect with the IMI to learn more about IMI’s ongoing efforts”.
We are sincerely grateful for UBI’s recognition and willingness to contribute. May this be the beginning of a fruitful connection and ongoing care for our precious sangha.
